A property in Mamaroneck has
been sealed off as investigators probe the cause of a
trench collapse that killed a construction worker Tuesday.
Mamaroneck police say the
worker from Stamford, Connecticut got trapped 10 feet underground and buried in
dirt at the site on Shore Acres Drive.
Emergency crews tried their
best to rescue the man, but it was only about an hour and a half into that
rescue mission when it tragically turned into a recovery mission.
The cause of the collapse is
still under investigation this morning, but experts
say there are a number of possible reasons, including wet weather and
vibrations from nearby construction equipment or lack of support along trench
walls.
The
house is located on a quiet street, and neighbors
passing by the commotion were stunned to hear about such an awful loss.
"When I came out walking, I saw the helicopter hovering,
and it just didn't move so I thought it must've been a traffic
accident…I think it's terrible. It's very sad," says Estelle Froman, of
Mamaroneck.
