Malls across New Jersey reopened their doors on Monday for the first time in more than three months.
At Freehold Raceway Mall in Freehold Township, store owners spent the weekend cleaning and disinfecting their stores in preparation for the reopening.
Face masks will be required, along with social distancing protocols.
"The mall is taking precautions,” says Danny Patino. “I hope everyone else is taking precautions. I just don't want situations where we open up too soon and we get like some states where we start to have a spike again."
Freehold Raceway Mall reopened at 11 a.m. and will follow a modified schedule. Not all stores and restaurants are reopening.
Some of the biggest and busiest malls are in North Jersey, with Bergen County having three major malls within about a 10-square mile radius.
The Garden State Plaza Mall brings in more than 22 million people a year. Paramus Mayor Rich Labarbiera says the reopening will be a big economic boost for the area.
"Most importantly, it's going to give our businesses a chance and consumers a choice and obviously everything will have to be done in compliance with the governor’s orders and making sure everyone remains safe while the malls do reopen again,” Labarbiera says.
In southern New Jersey, Preit, the company that operates malls in Cherry Hill, Cumberland and Moorestown, says that it is also limiting capacity inside of the malls and will follow CDC guidelines to make sure people are social distancing while shopping.
"Security has been pretty on top of us wearing masks so that's been good. I do feel like it's a little iffy to be opening so soon but at least I'm making sure that we're safe,” says Jonathan Vasquez, of Trenton.

The Preit malls will be open from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Gyms, movie theaters, amusement parks and arcades inside malls will remain closed for now.
