A police officer from Lyndhurst who was aboard an Amtrak train that derailed Tuesday in Philadelphia is being hailed a hero after he helped several victims to safety.
Officer Michael Keane says his experience as a police officer and a firefighter kicked in moments after the deadly crash.
Keane was reportedly traveling in the last car of the Amtrak train. He was traveling home from the Police Unity Tour in Washington, D.C.
Lyndhurst Police Capt. John Valente tells News 12 New Jersey Keane was able to escape the wreckage of the train with his fiancee, but went back in to help several victims, including the conductor of the train.
Police officials say the father of another patrolman was also on the train. Paul Passamano was also attending the Police Unity Tour event. He is being checked out at a hospital.
