Come Oct. 1, 2020, if you do not have a passport, you will need what's known as a Real ID to fly within the United States.
The first step to obtaining a Real ID is to fill out an application and prove who you are.
"Real ID has different requirements for the documents you need to bring in so we are going to have to educate New Jersians on that," says Sue Fulton, chief administrator of the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission.
After proving who you are, where you lived, and having your documents scanned into the system, everything else is standard, including taking a photo.
The Real ID comes complete with the indicating star.
"We are doing all of our Real ID issuance with our new appointment system," says Fulton. "You can still walk in, get your standard driver license registration, things like that, but if you want to get a Real ID, you need to go online and make an appointment."
Only a select few MVC locations are offering Real ID appointments.
Once you sign up, they will email you your closest available location based on the zip code you provide.
Appointments will be done at the counters.
For more information on how to sign up head to the Real ID New Jersey website.
