The 14-year-old boy who escaped unharmed in Monday night?s fatal Elizabeth shooting spoke about his experience Thursday, while a local leader announced he?s convinced the shooting was gang-related.
?I feel sad [because] they had no reason to do what they did to us. No reason at all,? the teen victim said behind layers of clothing and dark sunglasses.
The teen, who didn?t want to show his face, said he saw his friends being shot by a masked gunman. The incident happened on Fulton Street and was caught on tape. The teen escaped uninjured, but his friend Isaiah Davis was wounded and Elijah Henderson was killed.
Salaam Ismial, of United Youth Council, Inc., attended the news conference with the teen. Ismial said although the teens are not gang members, he is 100 percent convinced the shooting was the result of a bitter gang rivalry.
?Those children were in the wrong place at the wrong time,? Ismial said.
Ismial is calling on parents and police to get kids off the streets at night by enforcing a curfew. He is also appealing to gang members to call a truce.
The Union County Prosecutor?s Office did not comment on Ismial?s statements that the murder was gang-related. Prosecutors are urging anyone with information about the murder to contact investigators.
