Some Linden residents who live near the fuel pipeline allegedly targeted by a group of would-be terrorists say they had no idea about the structure?s existence.
Some residents say they just learned about the pipeline this weekend, when the alleged plot was thwarted. The pipeline carries millions of gallons of jet fuel 35 miles. The structure connects to a network of pipelines that is close to 4,000 miles long.
Many residents say they?d like to see increased security in their neighborhood near the pipelines.
Investigators say four men were plotting to explode the pipeline, which eventually leads to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Three of the men have been arrested. Federal officials are still searching for the fourth in the Caribbean.
According to Stephen Tse, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Rutgers, an explosion would not travel down the pipeline. ?There?s no air within in the pipeline and so you need air to fuel the fire,? Tse said.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up at up all metro-area airports.
