Three lifeguards on a training run in Ocean County say that they were just doing their job when they rescued a young girl caught in a rip current and nearly swept away.
The rescue happened Monday afternoon between Chadwick Beach and Brick.
Chadwick Beach lifeguards Brett Tusinac, Matt Schwartz and Matt Jamison say that they were running in a section of the beach that was unguarded when they saw the girl in trouble. They say that they jumped in without any rescue gear.
"I couldn't help but notice a girl out about 50 yards in the ocean. I thought at first she was doing fine but then I heard a subtle scream,” says Tusinac.
"If we didn’t go on that run, like she might have washed into the other swim area for the lifeguards and surf, or she might have drowned,” says Jamison.  “I'm just thankful we got there in time."
The guards brought the girl back to shore where she was reunited with her uncle. The girl was shaken, but not hurt.
The guards say that they were in the right place at the right time.
