New Jersey state lawmakers are looking to increase the penalty for drivers who violate the “move over law.”

Under the law, drivers are supposed to change lanes and slow down as they approach emergency vehicles that are stopped on the side of the road. Violators currently face a fine between $100 and $500.

Sponsors of a new bill say that drivers who violate the law are putting police officers at serious risk of injury or death and they want to increase the penalty.

If the new bill is passed, drivers who violate the “move over law” would face points on their driver’s license. A New Jersey Assembly panel advanced the legislation Monday.

The law was created in response to the death of New Jersey State Trooper Marc Castellano in 2010. Castellano was struck and killed by a vehicle while on duty.
