Lavallette town officials are considering an ordinance that would ban food deliveries to the town’s beaches.
The ordinance was discussed at Monday’s town council meeting, where officials proposed banning commercial operations like Uber Eats and Grubhub. Mayor Walter Lacicero says that it would be to provide “peace and tranquility” to the beach experience.
“Our boardwalk does not have any commercialization, any businesses up there. And the people who come here want to be left alone. They want to be quiet and not be bothered by smells or the trash that left or the seagulls that naturally invade when the debris is left behind,” he says.
Beach picnicking is already banned – food must stay on the boardwalk.
Some business owners in Lavallette tell News 12 New Jersey that the regulations currently in place are working just fine.
“Huge. Big part of our business – 80% of our crowds are summer business,” says Benny Daloisio who runs Lenny’s Pizza.
The pizzeria is about a block away from the boardwalk. Daloisio says that during a typical summer day they make a lot of deliveries to people near the boardwalk. He says that what the town is doing now works, considering 2019 was one of his busiest years on record.
“Let’s just keep it like a nice shore community. Not too much change and keep people at bay,” he says.
The mayor says that any changes to the policy would be meant to help the visitors and to protect local businesses from outside commercial interests. An ordinance is still in its early stages and has not yet been formally introduced.
