A portion of Newark Street in Hoboken was torn apart Tuesday morning by a 12-inch water main that gave way.
The street is now closed between Garden and Bloomfield streets while repairs are made by crews with Veolia Water.
The water main break left behind a gaping hole in the middle of Newark Street, which was covered in water and mud when the pipe burst around 10 a.m.
Hoboken is under a boil water advisory due to the break and low water pressure.
That means people must boil water or use bottled water to cook, drink or wash dishes.
Some people rushed out of their homes to move their cars when it happened - fearing they might fall into the ground.
Other residents had their cars safely towed away by the city.
“I walked outside to chaos, like streets blocked off, my car was in the most inconvenient spot. But it looks like just another day in Hoboken to be honest. The first thing I thought was my car was in the ground, but it was just covered in mud,” said Alanna Vizzoni.
“I walked down the street and saw a big water main break. Water started coming down the street, trashcans were floating by," said resident Wendell Jenkins.
The city is offering free water to those in need at three locations.
Those sites are the Multi-Service Center, Monroe Gardens and Fox Hill Gardens.
The city has an ongoing project to replace aging pipes.
Since 2016, Hoboken has replaced 25,000 feet of pipe.
Veolia Water has not yet said when the repairs will be finished.
