Powerful thunderstorms caused
major damage Tuesday across New Jersey, including in Westfield and
Parsippany, where there are numerous reports
of wires and trees down.
On Virginia Drive in
Parsippany, a large tree and branches came crashing down during the storm, but
crews have since removed it from the home.
There was similar damage on Wyoming Avenue in Westfield, where a large tree
came down on the front of a home. In both cases, it appears the
homeowners were fortunate that damage was limited to the
outside.
“The wire saved it,
supported the tree there,” says Kevin Kopec, of Parsippany.
The nearby utility pole
snapped in half with power lines down. The homeowner was forced to
return from his vacation down the shore.
“My older son, he was home
and then he went out to the store while this happened,” says Kopec. “Our
neighbor actually saw it come down.”
The storms contained large
amounts of rain, strong winds and large hailstones. Winds were up to 60 mph in
some areas. There was also lots of thunder and lightning.
Trees were uprooted all over
the state, along with utility poles. More than 90,000 people were left without
power at the height of the storm.
The storm also impacted
transportation around the state. Heavy rains caused some localized flooding on
the roadways.
