The Lakewood School District will be getting $36 million in state funding.
Classes in the district’s summer school program were canceled Monday because the funding had yet to be approved by a state monitor. Around 500 students who take those classes were forced to stay home.
School board officials held an emergency meeting Monday morning with parents to tell them about the situation.
“We have an obligation…to our students to bus them, to have an extended school year,” said school board attorney Michael Inzelbuch. “We have to give those children who are entitled, mandated incentive school year services. If we are missing days, we are going to have to make them up.”
The district will be ordered to pay back the money.
It was not clear if classes would resume Tuesday.
