Fair Lawn firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming out of a house near the 13 block of 3rd Street Tuesday evening.
Upon arrival, first responders transmitted a general alarm that quicky escalated to a second alarm, bringing about 45 fighter fighters to the scene.
The fire was in a bedroom on the second floor and was put under control 35 minutes after the fire department arrived.
During the search, a kitten was rescued by the police department and successfully reunited with its family.
Fair Lawn Fire Chief Michael Salvini said “We had a quick knockdown of the fire. The freezing conditions produced a very hazardous condition. Although we were able to put out the fire quickly there was major damage to the structure.”
One police officer was transported to a nearby hospital for smoke inhalation as a precaution.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
