A Monmouth County town wants to make it illegal to smoke in a car if there are children riding along.
Under a new proposal being floated, Keyport would be the first town in the state to ban smoking in your car if there are children present.
Keyport residents? opinions are mixed. Some smokers, like resident Willie Gill, said the legislation would be a good idea. He said, ?Its morally not right to smoke with a kid in the car, its obviously not good for the kid and its not good for an adult.? Others see it as a matter of privacy.
Smokers could be fined $75 if they're caught lighting up with a kid in the car, but police would not be able stop drivers specifically for smoking in cars. A public hearing on the issue is scheduled for April 24th.
