The Keyport Council voted Tuesday 5 to 1 to pass a controversial smoking ordinance.
Keyport has become the first community in Monmouth County to ban smoking in a car if children are inside. The law is a secondary offense, which means drivers must be stopped by a police officer for something else in order to be found guilty of smoking with a child in the car. If caught, drivers will be fined $75.
The ban has ignited a major debate among residents. Some say the issue of second-hand smoke is a no-brainer when it comes to children. Others question the necessity of passing a law like this. They feel the ordinance is an infringement on personal rights.
