The Trenton police director was a no-show at work Tuesday after a judge?s ruling essentially fired him.
The ruling comes after several citizens sued Joe Santiago because he doesn?t live within city limits, as required by a city ordinance. The judge said Santiago violated the requirement. Santiago lives approximately 50 miles away in Morris County.
Santiago could appeal the decision. However, those who sued him said that would only cost residents more money.
Trenton Mayor Doug Palmer, who has been Santiago?s most vocal supporter, has not yet commented on the ruling. Palmer has argued all along that he gave Santiago a waiver to live outside city limits, but the judge ruled that waiver was invalid.
The City Council could still save Santiago?s job by changing the ordinance. However, those who sued over the issue said they will try to block any change in the law.
