(03/01/06) NEWARK ? A federal judge rejected New Jersey?s lawsuit Wednesday over the takeover of Port Newark operations by an Arab company.
Representatives of the U.S. Justice Department say the suit is not necessary because Dubai Ports World, a state-run company of the United Arab Emirates, has already agreed to a review. State leaders had been looking for a concrete, court-ordered review instead of just a promise by the company. The judge also rejected New Jersey?s request to review documents given by Dubai Ports World to a federal panel that reviewed the deal. However, the state could eventually be granted access to those documents if the deal actually moves forward.
Five other ports in the U.S. are also included in the deal that has both Republican and Democratic leaders up in arms. According to those against the deal, allowing the United Arab Emirates to oversee port operations within the U.S. poses a major homeland security risk. The state can return to court if the initial review does not take place.
