Jersey City is taking steps to protect the city’s homeless from the COVID-19 virus.
Officials announced Tuesday protective steps including handing out bags of hygiene products to the homeless.
“This includes everything from toilet paper, to toothpaste, to wipes,” said Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop.
The city and county are also working together to relocate homeless people over age 60 from shelters to self-quarantine in hotel rooms near Journal Square.
Jersey City resident Kevin Brown is homeless but he has a job now. He cleans the public showers and bathroom facilities for Jersey City's homeless individuals. The shelters are now open five mornings a week to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. The showers are in trailers in Journal Square.
Homeless individuals are also receiving meals ready to eat.
