Jersey City housing official arrested on fraud, forgery charges

The Jersey City Department of Housing, Economic Development, and Commerce supervisor, Jessica Barreto, has been arrested following a fraud investigation.

Barreto is facing charges of computer criminal activity, forgery and tampering with records.

Investigators from the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office Special Investigations Unit worked alongside the Jersey City Police Department on the case.

The former supervisor allegedly accepted $1,500 in cash for personal benefit in return for granting a short-term rental permit.

Barreto was arrested on June 26 and is scheduled to appear in court on July 16.
