Budget concerns have brought plans for a Sept. 11 memorial in Liberty State Park to a halt.
Bids to construct the memorial were more than double the $9 million budget, with bids running as high as $25 million. Construction had been slated to begin this fall, but will be put on hold while a cheaper alternative is designed, officials say.
Monetary issues aren?t the only controversy the project has met. The group ?Friends of Liberty Park? opposes the memorial plans and is currently suing the state to stop construction. They claim the memorial will disturb the park?s view of New York City.
"The state just rushed forward with the project and they didn't really know what they were getting themselves into," says Cynthia Hadjiyannis, attorney for Friends of Liberty Park.
