Investigators are pointing to drag racing as the cause of a horrific Monmouth County accident that killed three people and injured two.
The crash occurred at the intersection of Route 33 and West Bangs Avenue in Neptune Township Wednesday night. Investigators say three cars were racing down Route 33 at speeds in excess of 65 mph. They say one of the cars broadsided a fourth car trying to make a left turn. The impact forced the fourth car off the road where it slammed into a utility pole.
Two brothers, 19-year-old Jesse Otero and 20-year-old Valentin Oterocruz, along with 20-year-old John Richardson, were killed in the crash. Two of the drivers are recovering at Jersey Shore University Medical Center. One of them remains in critical condition. The third driver was treated and released. All of the drivers of the three cars allegedly drag racing face multiple preliminary charges, including reckless driving.
The Monmouth County prosecutor is calling the incident an unfortunate accident and is asking anyone with information to come forward.
