Inspections targeting Newark businesses over the past two weeks have rendered several code violations and two store closures, city officials say. 

The inspections were carried out by a task force comprised of police, fire, code enforcement and health officers. They focused on areas that have received several customer complaints, including blocks of businesses on Springfield, Clinton, Maple and Chancellor avenues.

Not all businesses received summons. 

The violations issued ranged from overdue paperwork to building code violations. The two businesses closed by the task force included Delta gas station on Chancellor Avenue and S-I-G Market on Maple Avenue.

The store owner says his fire permits were overdue by less than a year and were filed last month. He calls the violations unfair government overreach in neighborhoods that need help, not hurdles.

The city says more inspections will take place throughout the summer.
