The controversy over the comments made by radio host Don Imus has given New Jersey broadcasters plenty to talk about this week.
Many thought Imus? comments about the Rutgers women?s basketball team were racist and sexist. Days after the team spoke out against Imus, he was fired by CBS radio and MSNBC, where his show was simulcast. Imus was originally suspended for two weeks, but that changed after the president of CBS said advertisers were pulling out of Imus? show.
Despite all the controversy, some feel special interest groups are trying to take over the radio. Philip Roberts, of the New Jersey Association of Broadcasters, said, ?All they have to do is change the dial, so they don?t have to listen to anything that they don?t think they are going to like. But why should they be able to infringe upon someone else who likes that stuff??
Meanwhile, WCTC talk radio host Steve Kaplan says Imus should not have been fired, only suspended. He adds that Imus doesn?t intend to put people down, as some other radio hosts do.
The Rutgers team met with Imus in Princeton Thursday night. The team later said it accepted Imus? apology.
