An iconic Italian bakery in Hoboken shut its doors for good Saturday after 43 years of service.
Many customers from the past and present stopped by Dom’s Bakery on 506 Grand St. to say goodbye.
“It's truly the end of an era. They've been here for so long and they've just been so good to the community. They're just wonderful people. I wish them the best luck,” said Dana Dipoto-Engeleka, of Toms River.
"I saw when they opened and I'm looking right now at them right as they close. It's a very sad emotion but it's a happy emotion for them," said resident Rose Cappiello.
"We had to say thank you to the customers somehow. This was probably the easiest way, we get to see everybody," said co-owner Florinda Castellitto.
Florinda and Dom Castellitto opened their own business in 1979 on 5th Street before they moved to 506 Grand St. in 1988. Baking was the family business.
"My folks had a business in Hoboken. After Dom and I got married, he started working for them and then eventually we bought our own place," Florinda Castellitto explained.
Esther Rodriguez worked at the counter at Dom's for 26 years and she said she left with a heavy heart.
"I've seen kids grow up, get married, have kids of their own. It hurts," Rodgriguez said.
Not only was Dom's Bakery a favorite among everyday people like the mayor, but it was also a favorite of Hoboken's very own Frank Sinatra.
As the Castellittos head for retirement, they said they have memories to last a lifetime.
“I guess it's kind of bittersweet. All these people, it's quite overwhelming. Not what I expected. Really beautiful, really beautiful,” Florinda Castellitto said.
