Experts say Americans will spend $25 billion this holiday season on gift cards, and now there are reports that thieves are trying to scam customers out of some of that money.
Many shoppers say it is convenient to purchase a gift card for someone. However, gift cards are becoming popular with thieves too. Consumer experts say thieves are writing down the numbers, waiting for people to activate the cards and then shopping online with them. While officials in several states have issued warnings about gift card fraud, New Jersey?s Division of Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau say there have been no complaints in New Jersey.
New Jersey residents should still take steps to protect themselves against gift card fraud. Experts urge all shoppers to only buy cards that don?t have the pin number scratched off. Customers should also only buy cards with pin numbers covered in cardboard. Finally, residents shouldn?t activate the cards until they are ready to use them.
