Hundreds of people gathered in Jersey City Monday to honor and mourn the detective who was gunned down last week while in the line of duty.
Detective Joseph Seals was shot and killed Dec. 10 in a Jersey City cemetery by two people who then went on to kill three people inside a Jewish grocery store. Authorities say that the shooting was a targeted hate crime.
As authorities continue to investigate the attack, Seals’ friends and family are remembering the 40-year-old father of five.
Seals had been on the Jersey City Police Force for 14 years. Colleagues say that Seals was a police officer who helped to get guns off the streets and was a detective that others looked up to and learned from. Friends and family say that Seals was a prankster who grew up in Jersey City and Bayonne.
Seals lived in North Arlington with his family. A vigil was held there Sunday evening in his honor.
A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Aedan's Church in Jersey City.
