An Ecuadorian immigrant and store employee at JC Kosher Market was remembered Thursday night at a vigil for the victims of this week's shooting.
Douglas Rodriguez worked at JC Kosher Supermarket for about a year before he died in the shooting. According to a GoFundMe account established by his niece, Rodriguez came to the United States for a better life with his wife and daughter. He was described as devoted, God-loving, honest and kind.
Through a translator, Rodriguez's wife says she has forgiven the shooters and spoke about being united as a community.
"I loved a man who taught me how to love even more, and only with the peace of God did I have the ability to forgive somebody that ripped away the love of my life," she says.
Funds raised will cover the continued support of Rodriguez's wife and daughter, as well as his planned burial in Ecuador.
Also in attendance at the vigil was Moses Ferencz's brother. Moses owned JC Kosher and lost his wife in the shooting. Several officials spoke at the event as well.
"We all have candles right now in our hands, and I want us to hold the candles up to our hearts and I just want us to think about the love that burns inside of our heart," says Councilman Jermaine Robinson.
There was a moment of silence for the victims, and to conclude the vigil, everyone placed their candle under the pictures of those who lost their lives.
