Local marine life advocates say a humpback whale has made a temporary home in our waters. The 25-foot humpback whale was first spotted over the weekend splashing around in Hempstead Bay. Officials believe the whale was attracted to the abundant fish in the bay and has been feeding several days. They're urging boaters to be on the lookout for the mammal and take it slow in the water.

"You will see whales and dolphins a lot of times especially when there is food around, but it's unusual to see them in the bay. We want to give people the heads up about the whale. If you come across, give the animal, give it plenty of room and reduce your speed. We don't want the whale, or anyone hurt," says Robert Weltner, the director of Operation Splash.

Marine life officials are monitoring the whale's movements to help it return back to sea.
