Forget once-in-a-lifetime deals - a chance like this might only come every 65 million years - the chance to buy a life-sized dinosaur.
Field Station: Dinosaurs at Overpeck County Park is closing down the exhibit after 14 years and 1 million customers. The program will continue with classroom presentations and touring exhibits, but the park - with more than 30 animatronic dinosaurs - will go away after the season’s end in November.
That means the stars of the show will need to find new homes, from the 39-foot T-Rex to the pterodactyl with a 20-foot wingspan - and the more backyard-sized ones, like 6-foot velociraptors. The dinosaurs are listed on
Facebook Marketplace.
Although the bigger pieces will likely be sold together to zoos or museums, the smaller ones could be bought by anyone.
“We've received calls from eccentrics who want a dinosaur in their backyard,” said founder Guy Gsell.
These dinosaurs are in working condition and range in price from $500 to $2,700. It takes plenty of maintenance to keep them ready to roar.
“A lot of glue, and extra fabric and paint,” Gsell said. “We have extra parts. We have extra control boxes. We have extra speakers.”
Although the park’s final season has seen its share of farewell visitors, the program’s spirit will remain in a new form.
“What really makes us special are the shows, the music, the puppets, the educational programming that we have here in the park,” Gsell said. “We're just taking that and we're packaging it up, and we're going to take it on the road.”
