New Jersey hospital workers were trained Wednesday to recognize gang tattoos by the state parole board in an effort to reduce hospital violence.
The lesson was offered to help the workers keep rival gang members separate inside hospital walls. In addition to learning about tattoos, workers were instructed to notice gang language and signs.
"We want the employees to be able to identify a potentially dangerous situation for themselves and other patients here in the hospital," says Sgt. Herman Rinaldi, of the state parole board.
The training session was given at Our Lady of Lourdes Medical Center by the parole board's street gang unit. The parole board supervises approximately 5,000 parolees considered to be gang members.
