Hudson Regional Hospital officials say that 20% to 25% of their COVID-19 patients on ventilators are also facing kidney failure.
Doctors and nurses say they are treating around 80 patients with coronavirus complications. They say COVID-19 affects small blood vessels, and that kidneys are prone to these affects.
Many of the patients have been put on dialysis machines to filter their blood. Doctors say individuals with pre-existing kidney issues face even more challenges.
Other complications associated with coronavirus include acute respiratory distress syndrome, sepsis and blood clots.
Staff at the Secaucus hospital say they were able to discharge 12 coronavirus patients Friday.
