Friday marked the day known as Transgender Day of Visibility.
Community and family members gathered in Jersey City to honor one transgender woman whose life has become a symbol of the tragedies and successes experienced by many members of the community.
That woman was Venus Pellagatti Xtravaganza. She was killed in 1988 and her killer has never been found.
Her appearance in the documentary "Paris is Burning" released two years later brought her national notoriety and has made her an icon in LGBTQ+ culture.
To commemorate Transgender Day of Visibility, friends, family and members of the House of Xtravaganza gathered in Jersey City where her former home was declared a community landmark.
