Everyone knows that planning a wedding can be very stressful.
After the big ceremony, the newlywed couple typically goes off on a honeymoon together. It is a time to relax, bond and consummate the relationship.
But a new trend shows that there are some couples who go off on solo vacations after the wedding, without their new spouse. They are called “solomoons or “unimoons,” according to
the New York Times.
Some say that it is not necessarily a bad thing.
“Learn more about the world by themselves,” says Kim McCabe of the adventure travel company G Adventures. “It can enable you to go see those places, go have those experiences and then bring it back to the relationship.”
Licensed psychologist Janie Feldman says that “solomoons” can allow a person to do what they want, when they want. But she says that it can have some negative effects.
“What these people may be missing is a really important opportunity to bond,” she says. “Too much is not healthy, but separate is not good.”
Feldman says that couples should find a good balance between independence and partnership.
