Authorities in Teaneck say they recovered a body Thursday amid the rubble of a house that exploded.
Fire investigators are attempting to determine what caused the house to go up. Rescue crews had been sifting through the wreckage for a 65-year-old man neighbors say lived alone. Two other people were injured by flying debris.
The blast happened at about 6:20 p.m. at 1320 Hastings St. and shook homes as far as five blocks away. Neighborhood residents say the explosion was so strong it damaged four nearby homes and forced the evacuation of people who live there.
"The house blew up like a deck of cards," says Teaneck Fire Chief Robert Montgomery.
Ari Gancharow says his house, which sits next to the one that exploded, suffered significant damage. He and several neighbors say they have complained about a gas smell in the neighborhood the past two weeks.
"There was a bad smell here for two weeks and next thing you know it is pretty weird that this happened," Gancharow says.
Neighbors say PSEG crews had been working in the area since about 2 p.m. Thursday. Calls made to reach the utility for comment were not returned.
