The mayor of Hoboken is considering some drastic cuts to the City Council.
Mayor Dave Roberts feels there is no need for the city to have nine Council members. Roberts says five is enough to run the city, which has a population of about 40,000 people per square mile. Roberts adds the annual elections for the Council are expensive and lead to political fighting. He would like to see one election every four years for the mayor and Council members.
Some residents wonder about the impact of fewer representatives in the city. Some residents disagree with Roberts and say bigger is better. Many think a larger Council gives residents better service. Roberts would like the people of Hoboken to consider the changes by 2009.
