Hoboken leaders addressed community concerns Monday about the future of recreational marijuana in New Jersey.

A city ordinance would have allowed for the zoning of marijuana dispensaries in the city. But the process was halted to allow for more public education and input.

“I want to make sure that when I press that ‘yes’ or ‘no’ button that I am pressing it based on what my community wants,” says Hoboken Assemblywoman Annette Chaparro.

The biggest concern from those against allowing dispensaries in Hoboken seems to be a fear that an influx of people would travel from New York to Hoboken to buy and use marijuana in the city.

“That’s why we’re here today, to really listen to the community and make sure that laws are tailored to reflect the interests of the community,” says Hoboken Mayor Ravi Bhalla.

The crowd seemed to be split between those in favor of allowing dispensaries and those against it.

Gov. Phil Murphy made the effort to legalize recreational marijuana in New Jersey one of the major focuses of his campaign. Hearings on the issues are reportedly scheduled for next week.
