The mayor of Hoboken signed an executive order this Earth Day to implement a series of environmental initiatives for the city.
Mayor Ravi Bhalla says that the Climate Action Plan will allow Hoboken to be carbon-neutral within 30 years.
Some of the initiatives include purchasing renewable energy for municipal buildings, working toward the ban of single-use plastic bags and looking for transportation options that do not produce greenhouse gases.
Black Rail coffee shop owner James Jung says that his shop is doing its part to protect the environment. He is taking advantage of the city’s free composting initiative.
“Our family, we’ve been composting way before we started the store,” Jung says. “Carrots, avocados, onions. We compost our bread.”
Jung’s story displays Hoboken’s “Green Seal,” which lets customers know that the shop is environmentally friendly.
Bhalla says that there are also plans for increased ridesharing programs in an effort to have fewer cars on the city’s roadways.
