A building under construction in Hoboken was demolished Tuesday after part of the building collapsed.
Pieces of brick fell off the facade of a building on Newark Street.
The collapse caused police to close the street between Hudson and Washington streets. Residents in nearby buildings were also evacuated for a time as a precaution.
A structural engineer evaluated the building and determined that it needed to undergo emergency demolition.
Residents who lived on the block were escorted home by police.
The building was damaged in a fire over the winter, which is why it was under construction.
