A driver who struck a man with his car in Bloomfield and left the scene won’t face criminal charges, according to police.
The crash was captured on surveillance video. It shows a white Mercedes striking 55-year-old Chris Christopher on Franklin Avenue Tuesday. The driver never stopped.
Christopher had surgery on his legs on Wednesday but was expected to be OK.
“He's really feeling blessed that he's not dead. And he’s been really just feeling blessed and that it could have been so much worse. He's in good spirits,” says Christopher’s girlfriend, Ginamarie Maggi.
Maggi made a post on social media asking for prayers and to help find the driver who struck Christopher.
Police eventually found the 84-year-old driver and issued him summonses for leaving the scene of and failing to report an accident. He was not facing any criminal charges.
“I think that’s absurd. We all saw the video,” says Maggi. “If you zoom in, you can see Chris getting hit and falling. So I’m very disappointed to hear that.”
Maggi says that she is thankful that the police found the driver, but she says that she hopes that charges are eventually filed.
“He left Chris for dead and could have killed him,” she says.
Maggi says that Christopher was walking to his car to go to work when he was hit.
