Historic Glimmer Glass Bridge reopens following maintenance
A historic bridge in Manasquan that was closed Tuesday morning for routine maintenance has reopened.
The Glimmer Glass Bridge was closed so that crews could realign cables on either side of the bridge.
The bridge crosses the Glimmer Glass Creek separating Brielle from Manasquan and is about 280 feet in length. The bridge, known as a counterweight drawbridge, was originally built in the 1880s. The current bridge was added in the 1930s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Replacing the bridge would cost millions of dollars and residents say they don't want to see history rewritten with a new bridge.
But the routine maintenance sometimes causes traffic delays that back up throughout the town.
The bridge was closed for months several years ago due to ongoing construction.
