Heavy rain Monday caused more flooding in Margate near the controversial sand dunes.
The rain caused “lakes” to form between the newly constructed dunes and the homes along the beach.
A judge ordered all work on the beach replenishment stopped for one week until solutions can be found after heavy rain caused a similar situation last week. The Margate mayor says that talks have been ongoing between all parties to come up with a solution to address the drainage. The mayor says that it took five days until crews were able to get rid of all the standing water last time.
The town has been in a battle with the state and federal government about the dunes, which were built to protect the shore after the damaged caused by Superstorm Sandy. The town and residents are against the dunes.
“I just hope that they finally listen to us and do what we want -- a big bulkhead and not these ugly dunes that are just causing everything to change,” says Margate resident Carol Savio. “The kids can’t swim, you’re worried about walking across, what’s getting on your feet.”
The next court hearing is scheduled for Friday. The mayor says pumps will be turned on to remove all the standing water.
