There is an EXTREME HEAT WARNING in effect for NJ through tomorrow until 8 p.m. Some heat alerts will last longer. This is for heat indices reaching close to 110 degrees.
Blistering, miserable, punishing, brutal, exhausting - just a few words to describe the weather today. I have a few other choices that I can't use here because foul language is usually frowned upon, but you get the idea.
The forecast for tomorrow is very similar, if not a degree or two hotter, than what we experienced today. The humidity is still wrapping us in that hot towel, so again, New Jersey will feel like a sauna.
The last time it was this warm was July 24, 2022. Afternoon highs reached 102 degrees at Newark Liberty International Airport. The heat index peaked at 111 degrees. Tomorrow will also be another record-breaking afternoon. The record is 97, set back in 1966. The forecast is 103 degrees under that blistering sun. All of our New Jersey reporting stations have set records today, as this intense dome of heat remains anchored over the northeast.
When will we get relief? By Thursday, a weak weather system dips through the state, bringing with it some shower chances. The temperatures will drop back down to seasonal averages in the mid-80s and cool even further to the mid-70s for Friday under cloudy skies.
It looks like there could be some occasional showers in Saturday's forecast, with heat returning with some sunshine for Sunday.
Please be safe in this extremely dangerous heat this week.
