The American Heart Association and Amerigroup New Jersey teamed up Monday to emphasize the importance of CPR training.
Health care experts taught students at William Paterson University how to perform two-step, hands-only CPR. The goal is to each 750 people how to perform the skill in just three days.
Amerigroup New Jersey’s Dr. Roberta McNeill says that knowing how to perform CPR can keep someone's blood pumping long enough for emergency services to arrive on scene.
"There's a lot of deaths that occur unnecessarily from heart attacks and heart failure after and people don't understand this is very simple…This is something the average citizen can do and prolong a life while you're waiting for EMS,” she says.
McNeill says that the most important thing to do if someone has an emergency is to call 911 right away, and then perform CPR if applicable.
Training will continue Tuesday and Wednesday at Rowan University. It is free and open to the public.
