Hackensack University Medical Center marked Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a special event on Monday.
The medical center had an informational event about breast cancer including ways to schedule screenings, education about the disease and how to routinely check yourself for warning signs.
“I think getting screened every year is what really is the most important,” said breast cancer survivor Maria Ortiz. “Even if you've had no family history or you've never had an issue before, it could happen at any time."
Breast cancer affects 1 in 8 women.
