A North Jersey Hospital is getting accolades for going green, but it's not just about helping the environment.
Hackensack University Medical Center has signed a pact with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to protect patients, especially kids, from exposure to harmful chemicals.
The paint in the children's wing of the hospital is chemical-free. The cleaning products being used are non-toxic. Those are the first steps toward keeping everyone, especially kids, healthy, by reducing environmental toxins that can cause asthma and cancer. The hospital has also installed low-flow faucets and toilets, and a plant wall was put in the lobby. The plant wall is meant to break down indoor air contaminants and produce purer, cleaner air.
The hospital also has a roof-top garden, where it grows organic fruits and vegetables used in the cafe and cooking studio.
