Gusty winds caused damage, power outages and some flooding across New Jersey Tuesday morning.
Residents of the Pelican Island section of Toms River say that they are used to some flooding due to rain and higher-than-normal tides in the Barnegat Bay. The wind gusts Tuesday caused large waves to splash over the bulkhead. Most of the flooding subsided by the early evening.
The strong winds also brought down trees in several parts of the state, including the Leonardo section of Middletown and in Elmwood Park.
Hazel Steel, 92, told News 12 New Jersey that she was not going to take any chances and cleaned up her yard before the bad weather came through.
“It was going to be heavy winds…that’s what my daughter told me,” Steel said. “I wasn’t going to come out and do it, but I thought, well, it’s pretty warm out here right now and it’s going to be cold later.”
New Jersey’s utility companies reported that several tens of thousands of customers were without power at one point or another Tuesday due to wind gusts knocking down powerlines and utility poles.
The gusty weather also caused flight delays at area airports. Newark Liberty International Airport was reporting a three-hour delay at one point Tuesday due to the wind. Travelers are still urged to check with their airlines to find out the status of their flights.
News 12 meteorologists say that most of the wind and rain is expected to subside by the overnight hours.
