Grover Cleveland Presidential Library in Caldwell expands public hours

The Grover Cleveland Presidential Library & Museum in Caldwell is expanding its public hours, giving visitors more opportunities to explore the life of the only U.S. president born in New Jersey.
Beginning Sunday, Sept. 6, the library will be open from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and Sundays. Wednesday hours began in the spring, and reservations are not required.
The library is located in the Visitors Center next to the Grover Cleveland Birthplace Historic Site at 207 Bloomfield Ave. Its collection includes photographs and displays documenting Cleveland's public and private life, along with archives related to First Lady Frances Folsom Cleveland.
Cleveland was born in Caldwell in 1837, the son of a Presbyterian minister. He later moved to New York, became a lawyer and rose rapidly in politics, serving as mayor of Buffalo and governor of New York before being elected president.
Cleveland served as the nation's 22nd president from 1885 to 1889. After losing his reelection bid to Benjamin Harrison despite winning the popular vote, he defeated Harrison four years later and returned to the White House as the 24th president, serving from 1893 to 1897. He became the first U.S. president to serve nonconsecutive terms.
His New Jersey story did not end in Caldwell. After leaving the White House in 1897, Cleveland and his family settled in Princeton at a home he named Westland. He became a Princeton University trustee in 1901 and remained active in university affairs until his death in 1908. He was buried in Princeton Cemetery.
The presidential library will also be open from noon to 4 p.m. during the Caldwell Street Fair on Oct. 4, when presentations and children's activities are planned.
