Gov. Phil Murphy says that he did not move the goal posts so that he could announce that New Jersey has reached its vaccination goal.
Last week, the governor said that the state’s goal was to fully vaccinate 4.7 million adults against COVID-19 by the end of June.
Murphy and state health officials announced on Friday that the state had met that goal. But the 4.7 million number also included 12-15-year-olds, along with more than 200,000 New Jersey residents who received their vaccine out of state.
At his COVID-19 briefing on Monday, the governor said that he is confident that New Jersey will get to 4.7 million adults fully vaccinated soon.
“It's pretty obvious that a vaccinated person who lives, works or studies in New Jersey is a vaccinated person that is helping us in our overall public health objectives, not only helping themselves, it's helping us be a healthier state…The goal posts are right where they were. We're celebrating both of these,” Murphy said.
According to the Department of Health, only 2% of total vaccine doses in the state have gone to those between 12 and 15 years old.
