Gov. Jon Corzine says will cost $7 billion to fix New Jersey's infrastructure, and some say it?s time to raise the state?s gas tax to foot the bill.
Some are calling for repairs to the state?s infrastructure after the bridge collapse in Minnesota. Nearly one-third of the state's highways are structurally deficient or obsolete, according to transportation statistics.
The gas tax in New Jersey has not increased since 1988 and stands at 14.5 cents per gallon, which is the third lowest in the nation.
Corzine is considering plans to boost transportation money to resurface roads, which could involve an increase in tolls or a gas tax hike.
Former Gov. Jim McGreevey considered increasing the gas tax by 12.5 cents in 2003. The measure did not go through.
