Governor Jon Corzine (D-NJ) signed New Jersey?s $30 billion budget Saturday, ending a weeklong government shutdown.
The signing, before 7 p.m., formally ended the budget impasse between Corzine and his own party. The governor signed the budget at his statehouse office and called the incident ?regrettable.? Corzine indicated that the shutdown should not have occurred and said it can never be repeated. About 45,000 state workers missed out on a week?s worth of pay. The compromise deal includes a sales tax hike and property tax relief.
Earlier in the day, Corzine signed an executive order clearing the way for lottery ticket sales to resume, state parks to reopen and casinos to get back in the game. Most state-run offices are expected to reopen Monday.
